When headaches keep coming back
Most headaches are not caused by a serious illness. But a headache that keeps returning, gets worse, or does not improve with self-care deserves medical assessment.
Notice the pattern
Keep a simple diary of when the pain starts, how long it lasts, and any symptoms that come with it. Note sleep, meals, fluids, and medicines. These details can help a clinician understand possible triggers.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical advice for headaches with vomiting, vision problems, or pain triggered by coughing or exercise.
A sudden, extremely painful headache, or a headache with weakness, a seizure, confusion, difficulty speaking, loss of vision, or high fever and a stiff neck needs emergency assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
Preparing for your consultation
Bring your symptom diary and a list of medicines you take. Explain how the headaches affect your usual activities.
